5. Make a decision where you would like to backup the image. You can choose an external drive, burn to multiple DVD’s, or store it on a network location.
Note: If you choose to backup to an external hard Disk or DVD please make sure the device is connected to your computer in order for it to show in the options below. Please ensure the device has sufficient space as well to backup your entire system. This will be compressed but it is still a large file
Important Note:
  • Backup to network is not available in Windows 7 Home Premium or Home Basic
  • Only NTFS formatted partitions can be backed up. Make sure if you’re saving to USB sticks or portable hard drives they are NTFS formatted.
  • It’s best to save your drive to an external hard disk / DVD
  • If you try to select another partition on the same physical hard disk you’re backing up from, there will be a warning about it because that hard drive failing will result in both operating system and the backup being lost.
6. The next screen will offer to backup any other volumes you might want to include in the process, the main system partition and the small 100MB boot partition if present will be automatically selected and cannot be touched.

7. You can include other drives if you want as well but remember that will add to the size of the final image

8. At the final confirmation window, the Backup and Restore tool will tell you how much space it could take to create the backup and clicking the Start backup button will start the process

9. Depending on the amount of data and the speed of your computer this could take several minutes or hours

10. After the process is complete you get the option to create a system repair disc which you should choose Down the road, if your computer crashes, insert the System Repair Disc into your computer. Your computer loads from the System Repair Disc rather than your computer’s hard drive

11. When it comes time to restore the image, you will be able to use the System Recovery Options to get the system back.
